What is manual handling?
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations define it as 'any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or by bodily force'.
Any activity where an individual is required to lift, move or support a load, will be classified as a manual handling task
Why undertake Manual Handling Training?
Manual handling is one of the biggest causes of workplace accidents. More than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported each year to the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities are caused by manual handling - the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force. It has a major impact on all workplaces, and costs the economy hundreds of millions of pounds every year.
An estimated 12.3 million working days were lost in Great Britain due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders. On average each sufferer took about 20 days off in a 12-month period.
